Clements is getting married so a bachelor party was thrown. We skated from his house to the Bro Bowl, from the Bro Bowl to Hooters, to some sketchy strip club I missed because I didn't take a cruiser board, then to Res. It was a pretty fun evening.

After the contest I took my little homie from Daytona Devin Bagnoli to the Bro Bowl and Turtle Ditch in downtown Tampa. He'd never gone out and shot street photos. Big day for the little guy.

Someone built something new at the ditch. Devin, frontside ollie.

My buddy Turtle drove Devin out and hung out/skated a bit. His homie is a BMX'er and was hyped on the ditch. I don't know anything about BMX, so this trick is a mystery to me, but I'm still hyped on my first BMX photo.

As per usual, we encountered a huge shit storm of problems trying to skate Tampa's newest outdoor public park.

The day started at Rob's. Can't beat the view.

The men identifying the "stanky leg" frame out of a 3 flip sequence while the girlfriends made us a beyond delicious brunch.

Somehow we went street skating on a Monday and got some good photos. It's nice when things work out.

We went to this thing. No one was feeling it enough to get into it. Rough run up and a landing into a sidewalk to a brick street

We were supposed to go to Atlanta for a long weekend trip with the illustrious Gator Board Shop team. But since those bothersome floods came through and ruined our fun, not to mention many peoples lives, we had to pick another option. We ended up on a little Orlando/Daytona adventure.

First spot was a ridiculous gap in the tourist part of Orlando

Had to get on a clothing donation box for the homeless to get the angle. It was okay I guess

After a long battle and some stress we just left. No point in blowing your load on the first day of a trip

Frank was injured so he was filming the whole time

We got over our case of the over its and went skating in Orlando. The plan was to just go back to the home base of Tampa but we ended up finding some cool stuff in Orlando, even what we want to think is a new spot

We got something much cooler, but you know, it can't be blogged, at least not yet

John got some tight stuff on the trip, including this frontside flip over the manhole cover

But he had to work for it; this slam sounded as bad as the bottom photo makes it look

So John became my photo assistant and picked up second angles the rest of the day

I went to photography school with a girl from Clearwater and one night she told me about her boyfriend's sister, who was apparently pretty gangster.

"Yeah, she calls Clearwater 'Wick City'".

Neither her nor her boyfriend knew why Clearwater was also "Wick City" but I don't argue with gangsters.

So anyway, Brandon Knowles and me went to check out a crazy new spot he found out in "Wick City" after work yesterday.

Crazy spot. I'm really hyped on it. I'm not hyped that my camera equipment wasn't working properly. Sorry, Brandon.

Labor Days

Labor Day meant I was off work from both of my jobs. It also meant a lot of the businesses usually not too hyped on skating going down on their property were closed, with its employees at cookouts and unconcerned with what we were up to. I like that.

Are You Ready For The Country?

Porpe decided it was a good idea to hold a demo at the Bushnell Skatepark, which is small, shitty and patrolled by Police who make sure helmets are always worn. I am a resident of Bushnell. My taxes go to fund this. Porpe called back to my desk about a week ago and said "Steve! Bushnell demo September 4th. You down?"
"Are you sure about this?" was all I could think of.
"Yeah, it'll be a good one."
"If you say so."

Also, I ordered an adapter cord for an off camera flash and paid $12 extra for it to be at my house at least 2 hours before the demo. According to UPS, for some reason the box was "rescheduled" for a September 8th delivery. Way to drop the ball, B&H Photo.

Addendum: This is an e-mail I got from Henry Posner, Director of Corporate Communications about my cord's late arrival: "We appreciate your purchase and understand your frustration but no one from B&H dropped anything. We received and shipped your order 9/2 for delivery 9/4. It was UPS, not B&H, which rescheduled delivery. The s&h fee originally applied to your transaction is being refunded to you in anticipation of our getting a refund from UPS. Under the circumstances I think it's reasonable to ask you to modify your comments. Thank you."

Charachter At the Jorge Michael Ramp

After work we all convened upon Jorge's tropical, and unbelievably fast backyard mini ramp for a friendly session. For a late August day in Florida the weather was surprisingly nice, by which I mean not unbearably hot. Between the hours of 8am to 5pm most of the esteemed members of the SPoT staff are mainly, if not strictly, business. So it's always nice to cut free from the office and enjoy the simplicities of a backyard mini ramp session.

This is a pretty accurate portrayal of the management off the clock

It's just not a mini ramp session with Ryan Clements without a tail block. It's just too bad I didn't have my angle sorted out before he pulled out the old reliable

I got a ridiculous amount of photos of Jacob. Not surprising, as he doesn't really stop skating throughout a session

Got heshy in the bowl after work the other day with Jacob Krajewski. We shot some photos for Ian Gow's upcoming and untitled 'zine.

I now call Ian "J. Jonah Jameson", who was the Editor-In-Chief of The Daily Bugle, the Newspaper from Spider Man. It's surprising how easily he's slid into the Editor-In-Chief position, really.

"Steve, I want a photo of Jacob for the 'zine." He'll state.
"Definitely. I'm down. Do you have an idea of what you want?"
"Yeah, like, something gnarly in the bowl, but like, whatever he wants to do, I don't care,"
"Umm, okay. I'll shoot that after work."

Ironically, that's not nearly the vaguest photo idea description I've ever gotten

After I got back from Miami Porpe called me and told me to come back to the maintenance warehouse of the park, otherwise known as "the dungeon."

"What's going on?"

"Just come back to the dungeon." He simply replied.

I came back to see a new addition to Frosty's warehouse. The Quarterpipe to wallride got a slight facelift when Frosty and his boys took the guts out of the cinder block walls making a lip. They also painted a huge devils face onto the wall, so you're stalling lip tricks inside the devil's mouth. Pretty gnarly. Most men would think of skating something and stalling on the devil's bottom lip as a sort of tempting fate, but I came to realize Frosty and the rest of the Tampa tranny posse aren't most men.

I went to Miami with Skatepark of Tampa for Manny Mania. It was a short but fun trip.

We got to Miami and the hotel Red Bull put us in was Downtown. It was a really swanky Hilton. This was the outdoor lobby. Reminded me of A Night At The Roxbury when Doug and Steve have the idea for the nightclub where outside the club was the inside and vice versa.

"Hey, we got 3 hours before the contest, let's go street skate. Oh wait, it's raining." I forgot it rains everyday in Miami.

TJ Sparks came with us. I botched the idea I had for this photo.

Some very attractive girl shooting photos (I should've said something charming to her) wanted to get a higher up angle but something seemed to be holding her up from her goal. She asked Joel for help and he promptly grabbed her camera and stood right on top of a stool and shot a photo to check the angle.

RB Umali and Frankie are OG's as far as documenting Skateboarding on the East Coast goes. I grew up watching RB's footage in old Zoo York videos and seeing Frankie's photos in Strength Magazine (RIP) so I thought it would be cool to shoot a photo of both of them. Then this News man stepped in. Eh.

Richie was skating really well in Manny Mania MIA and started trying to manual the wave pad (I don't know the real name for it, ask Al Russell, he built it) and trying Impossible's out of it. He didn't make it, which sucks, but he was getting really, really looped out trying them. Who knew a Manual contest would have such wild bails?

This is when our tire shredded off half of its tread in the Everglades.

Got back to the park where we were supposed to shoot an Element demo right as it ended thanks to the astonishingly poor service at the Tire Kingdom in Naples. Ever had someone take almost 2 hours to sell you a tire and put it on your car? Ugh.

Bam was there. It's nice to see he still draws a crowd. I'd like to pretend they were all there to see Levi Brown pop tricks 2 feet higher than anyone else, but sadly I'd just be kidding myself.

We got to the park at 7am to go to the Warped Tour in St Pete. It turned out to be a lot more fun than I thought. I'd like to think we made it fun. If that sounds a little egotistical to you, that's fine, the 25 other people we had in our posse like to think the same thing.

I thought Alex Bowers wouldn't be as stylish as normal since it was such an early start on the day. I thought wrong.

It was a thick posse sort of day.

Jorge Angel, Porpe, Captain of the ship, is ALWAYS psyched. Getting up at 6am to go to Warped Tour? Psyched! Torrential downpour while we're packing up the tent? Psyched! He even re-hurt his knee in the circle pit of the Bad Religion show, but he was still really, really psyched.

Another thing Porpe was really psyched on was selling a few tickets to this guy.

We had a hefty load.

Rain came on as soon as we finished setting up. There's no fun in squirting people with water guns if they're already wet. Thank God it dried up.

Brought older photos from past Warped Tour's. Jereme picked through them.

Brian Schaefer's brother Wayne was running shit all day. From starting the set up the tent, to getting people hyped on throwing water balloon's, to the water guns, etc. I guess those Schaefer boys just know how to get the party started.

I jokingly said "I'm glad they made Wizard Smoke his own pro model shirt. Jereme said "Really? Are you serious?!" No jereme.

Why pay for tickets when you can swim across the channel from St Pete Beach to Vinoy Park and get in for free. They thought they'd get away clean, and they did for the most part, but if Security wanted to get them they probably could have. I mean, it's not hard to spot the soaking wet dudes without wristbands.

But after this business started, a lot more people than that guy were soaking wet.

Alex was even ready to tear shit up.

Porpe will high five anyone. Even a Security Guard telling us not to throw water balloons at the stage.

If you look to the right, you'll see Jereme. This is him coming out of his shell. I always thought of him as this reserved, nice kid, but now I see he's got his deviant side to him.

Not a lot of pedestrian foot traffic, so Big Wayne turned on our own people.

Not even the Handicapable were safe.

Then the ladies started trolling around. I wonder if she knew this would be on the internet?

The circle pit for this band was gnarly. This chick almost clocked the singer with this roundhouse kick.

On the ramp, Jereme and Levi went to work.

Bod came UP. Look at the water spraying around. You could almost pretend he's in the winner's circle of a Hot Dog eating contest. In actuality he just sweet talked this Cougar and her friend.

Body convinced a girl to box one of his friends. He was so excited he started imitating Don King and bouncing around.

Porpe took us out to Tarpon Springs to do a demo at Astro Skate. It's a roller rink down the street from Westside Skateshop.

It's too bad Porpe couldn't skate. But it's all good, he put on a quick phone picking up demo at Sprint on the way to Tarpon.

Jereme got right into it with a back lip.

It was pretty much Lipslide City. Jacob did his Frontside.

Ran all over Polk County shooting photos today.

Started things off at the horribly fun Adair Skatepark. It was nice having a crew full of dudes who grew up skating such nonsense.

Frank took a funny spill on a Footplant Back Disaster. I'm so bummed the first frame isn't in focus.

Nice.

Pat and 'dem showed up.

And got with some bluntstalls themselves too.

Frank let them know who had the first one of the day though.

Aaron went for it.

The real draw of thos spot is the wall to drop.

Rain brought a hasty retreat to higher ground.

Aaron's been wearing crazy gear for so long it's weirder for me to see him in normal clothes.

Then we skated a gap to rail in a shopping center on a Monday. Smart smart smart.

No dice.

Done deal.

Frank and his posse cruised back down south after a harsh interaction with a grumpy school teacher so we went to a barrier spot Aaron wanted to skate.

But Pat, fresh off an ankle injury, got in on the action.

Filmer Pat came out at this spot. He asked me,
"Did you get any photos without me in the frame?"
"Well yeah but I want to shoot a sequence. Can you film it from the right of the barrier, 3 feet away?"
"Aaron's gonna have to do it twice."

He did.

And marked his territory.

Aaron left to pursue other opportunities so Pat and me hit Downtown.

Went to manifest a spot I see everyday on the way to work.

I didn't think to bring a ladder or anything until Brad asked "How are we going to get up on the roof? Problem solved.

Totally a land, it just looks a little uncomfortable. Can't really blame them. This was a sketchy scenario.

I came to notice that I always get something cool when I go skate with Ethan.

The start of this delivery was amassed via "The 'Space", Myspace. My old friend Kyle Whitaker, LB Kyle as he's known, sent me a message asking for my address.

Webster, FL 33597 if you want to come hang out, skate a pre-fab mini ramp and listen to 80's. Punk Rock with me." was my reply.

Kyle is a big fan of that 80's Punk Rock. Dead Kennedy's, etc. But I got no reply.

A couple days later (LB Kyle moves quick, apparently) the mailman came and dropped off a 5X9 manila envelope at the stoop this afternoon.

Kyle told me (about a year ago now that I think about it) that he was going to mail me photos, but I never got any. I didn't know what he'd cooked up to send me. Prints? Drawings? With Kyle I can never be sure. He's so all over the place I never know what he's up to. I'll talk to him one month and he's in Santa Cruz, then he's in Eastern Europe with his girlfriend. Then I see him at the Skatepark of Tampa. Then he's off to Ohio.

I opened the envelope with scissors because he tapes the holy shit out of it. Precious content, gotta be secure.

I got blessed with a great 'zine, and a cool poster. I didn't know Kyle was a good illustrator. I just thought he was good at living.

4 big pages of an interesting story, live music and skate photos. Kyle and me both are pretty into skating ditches, and I was pleasantly unsurprised to see some sloped concrete Skateboarding going down.

Between social commentary, Punk Rock and Skateboarding, Strange Pursuit is all over the place while still being fun and interesting. A lot like Kyle.

LB Kyle even shouted out one of the most stylish skaters to rise from Tampa, Matt MacMillan.

I have no idea how you can possess a copy of Strange Pursuit too, but I think finding Kyle on Myspace (http://www.myspace.com/cycoskate).

I'm happy to put this bad boy in my drawer with all the other 'zines I've accumulated over the years. If you're wondering what Thrasher that is, it's the Jeff Pang Brooklyn Banks cover. Righteous.

Hardcore shows are always a good time. Especially when there's a bunch of people from Polk and Highlands county there. Good times with good people.

Alyssa got things going at a pretty reasonable hour.

Then, Sebring Hardcore. No nonsense, he got right to business.

Last time I saw Ernie playing music he was behind some turntables playing Dirty South Rap jams. Nice to see he's so multifaceted.

These guys are young, still teenagers. But they can keep up Guitar-wise.

My favorite thing about their live show is that there isn't a lot of bullshit in between songs. Just, "Thanks, this next song's called ________." Their animated stage presence is cool too.

If the venue looks a little rough it's because it's an old Cattle warehouse turned into a Skatepark. There was even an industrial floor scale for Cows and Bulls on the floor.

Both of these dudes are ill at what they do. They're also really cool laid back Highlands County, FL types. I guess they get all their aggression out playing gnarly Hardcore music so they're calm the rest of the time.

Another interesting thing about a lot of Hardcore and Metal bands is that they usually smoke a lot of Weed. And then play this really aggressive, hard music. Makes me wonder how pissed off they'd be if they didn't smoke. I bet the murder rate would skyrocket.

I've never seen a Hardcore band get so many girls hyped before. Definitely not a bad thing considering how many fine Sebring girls were in the building.

Frank spotted this pool and checked it. Too bad it was Crackhead Inn. The last thing they wanted was skaters attracting Cops.

This is the second spot in 10 minutes that Sebring local Fatt anihalated. I've always wanted someone to skate this but no one ever has. It's been around for probably 30 years but no takers. You have to make a curve and bomb a hill.

Franks girlfriend Alyssa gets her lady magazines sent to Frank's shop so sometimes they end up in the back of his pickup. Tyler likes them city Womern's.

He also likes killing it at the skatepark. I'd like to take the time to tell you my favorite Tyler Osborn story now. One time after a night out in Sebring he starts talking about how he was harassed by a Cop for drinking in the street in Ybor City. "Don't arrest me for havin' no beer" he told us. "Ain't no crime for no hard workin' man to drink no beer. Don't arrest me for havin' no little bit of pot neither." He continued. "Or for no fishin' in an unlicensed boat with no license." Wih which he concluded in a a heated tone "Does it look like I know the law of fishin'?!?!"

Brandon Knowles came out after skating the Volcom contest. Took him to this thing. No success.

So I took John Reece there. No success. Who wants a go at this spot?

All in all, a busy, long, really successful day.

I've been putting a lot of work into a few commercial projects lately and I'm still getting out and shooting skating, but it's a lot more calculated now. These photos are pretty much as non-calculated as possible. We all happened to be at the skatepark at the same time and decided to shoot a little. Just like when I was 16.

So I messed around with Brad and James at the park.

Strictly warm up shots. That's why they suck so bad. I was getting my settings right.

The usual routine. Going skating and documenting it.

Stephen Buggica finally got his VX back from Tampa PD so I rounded the posse up and got a sesh going.

PJ came along, and things got started pretty early once we finally decided on a spot.

I like this. Too bad most mag editors wouldn't. If only it was 2000 again!

The cop that was right across from the street from the 3 stair. I walked up to her and politely asked if we could skate it. "I don't see any problem with that." This photo is my way of shouting her out for being so reasonable.

It's a good thing PJ didn't land this one; look at that gross angle. Anyway, the heat was on (literally and not metaphorically) so it was on to a more agreeable spot.

I'm a christian (just not with a capital C) and am undoubtedly a friend of Jesus. However Skate contest led by 40-something year old men who know nothing about Skateboarding and use it as a tool to push God onto children who just want to skate doesn't sit right with me.
